SEC Chairman to leave at the end of 2020

SEC Chairman to leave

Jay Clayton, Chairman of the SEC since May 2017, will conclude his tenure at the end of 2020 according to an announcement from the SEC this month. Mr Clayton served as Chairman for more than three and half years.

Under Mr Clayton, the SEC was historically productive with regard to rulemaking and achieving monetary remedies. During Mr Clayton’s tenure the SEC advanced more than 65 final rules from the SEC’s policy divisions and offices, many of which modernized and improved rule sets that had not been reviewed and updated in decades. The SEC also obtained orders for over $14 billion in monetary remedies, highlighted by a record $4.68 billion in fiscal year 2020.

Mr. Clayton thanked his immediate predecessor, Mary Jo White, and all the former Chairs of the Commission saying “The opportunities we have had are a result of their efforts and stewardship. I am also grateful to my fellow Commissioners and the SEC staff for their dedication. Through their continued service, I know the SEC is well-positioned for prolonged success.”

With Mr Clayton’s departure and President-elect Biden taking office in January 2021 it remains to be determined who will replace Chairman Clayton at the head of the SEC.
