Singapore Briefing | The GDPR impact for companies in Asia

Bovill briefing | The GDPR impact for companies in Asia | Singapore | Event date: Wednesday 16 May 2018

Asian companies need to ensure the personal data of EU citizens is protected according to GDPR legislation. Many firms assume that GDPR coming into force on 25 May 2018 is just an extension of prevailing international data privacy laws or worse still does not apply in Asia. It most definitely does!

GDPR reasserts the need for good data security and introduces more personal data rights for individuals in the EU. To avoid non-compliance and a fine, and ensure you meet the new requirements, will require clear risk mitigating actions to be taken.

GDPR will require a mindset shift for those with information security and compliance responsibility. The GDPR legislation will move data security efforts from reactive defence against conventional data security access breaches and external cyber threats to proactive prioritisation of internal controls to avoid a personal data breach.

We welcomed senior management, and legal and compliance professionals from across Singapore’s financial services sectors. Bovill presented the highlights of this new regulation, plus provideed a method of approach to minimise compliance risk. Also, we contrasted where GDPR requires ‘action’ to be taken by firms rather than relying on the privilege of ‘no action’ defaults as set out by Asia Data Privacy regulation bodies.
